Those arrested were conducting a peaceful protest against the ongoing trial of five of their colleagues, accused by the Iranian court of breaching the public order and security as a result of their participation in a peaceful demonstration for women's rights in June 2006. The 37th began 15 January and will end 2 February 2007, while the 38th and 39th will take place between 14 May and 1 June, and 23 July and 10 August, respectively. The committee of 23 highly-respected, independent legal experts are responsible for monitoring Member States' compliance with CEDAW. During reporting sessions, government representatives are encouraged to engage in constructive dialogue regarding gaps and challenges.
