DR CONGO: Plight of girl soldiers overlooked

As charges of sexual violence have not been included in the indictment of former Congo warlord Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, there are fears that the voices of girl combatants that have suffered sexual exploitation, will not be heard. Local charity worker Waruzi told of former girl combatants - who often have been raped and kept as sex slaves – who hear there is a court in Europe called the ICC dealing with war crimes, but they are disappointed to find it is not also pressing charges of sexual violence. "They feel that they are forgotten, and the court is only concerned with boys," He said girls very specifically feel that their exploitation as sex slaves has "broken their future ... [as] they cannot be married and are rejected by their communities"...

The Assistant Secretary-General for Mission Support in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Jane Holl Lute, spoke of the questions concerning investigations (of sexual exploitation) by peacekeepers serving in the United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS), as well as the question of increased child prostitution associated with presence of the Mission. The cases are being handled by the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS).  Between January 2004 and the end of November 2006, investigations had been completed against 319 peacekeeping personnel in all missions, resulting in summary dismissals of 18 civilians and the repatriation of 17 police and 144 military personnel.
