Women make strides in politics, but progress has slowed

Women are gaining political power around the world, with more women than ever in parliamentary posts, the Inter-Parliamentary Union said Thursday during a United Nations summit on women's and girls' rights. However, the increase in the number of female politicians has slowed in recent years and much more needs to be done to boost gender equality, the group said.

Afghan Female MPs' Rough Year

Female parliamentarians in Afghanistan have ended 2006 feeling fractured and far from the beginning of a true women's caucus.  Sahira Sharif, one of the nation's first female members of parliament, hopes to introduce legislation to ban forced marriages, which the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission says make up 38% of all marriages in the country.  Other female parliamentarians, including Fawzia Kofi, are pressing for laws to be adopted to empower police to investigate domestic violence without having to refer to a complaint.  Both Sharif and Kofi say their first year in office has prepared them for more rough times ahead.

Women and girls must be protected from violence, UN official tells rights committee

States who have signed on to the United Nations international bill of rights for women must continue to press for an end to gender-based violence, a senior UN official today told experts gathering in New York to evaluate compliance with the treaty.

"Regrettably, violence against women and girls remains unabated in whatever form and manifestation, depriving them of the full enjoyment of their human rights," said Rachel Mayanja, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, according to the text of her remarks.

Ms. Mayanja was addressing the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, a panel comprising 23 international experts on women's issues, which opened a two-week session at UN Headquarters in New York.
